Russell Mallen

Russell Mallen began his journey in progressive education more than a decade ago at MUSE Global School in Calabasas. He was inspired by the strong foundations he received at a public school that had reasonable class sizes (frequently <20, never more than 30), dedicated teachers, and rigorous academics. His experiences in high school and college, both inside and outside the classroom, cultivated a deep appreciation for mathematics and science. Rather than specializing in a single discipline, Russell chose to teach and tutor across multiple subjects, working with students in mathematics and science from grades 6 through 12. His students often joke that he teaches too much math in his science classes, but he knows the two are inseparable and that understanding their connections leads to deeper learning.

A defining moment in Russell’s career came early in his professional life when, despite never having a college course in polymers, he earned a patent in polymer research at the age of 24 (U.S. Patent No. 5,183,692). His electrical engineering and materials science education at MIT taught him several necessary lab skills, but Russell had to teach himself about polyimide coatings. This experience shaped his educational philosophy: success is determined less by what a person already knows and more by how they approach learning and problem-solving. Russell believes that curiosity, perseverance, and effective learning strategies are more valuable than subject-specific knowledge alone.

Building on strong fundamentals in physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematics, Russell has applied this philosophy throughout careers in engineering, finance, and education. Just as he learned complex polymer science through the guidance of an exceptional mentor, Dr. Mukherji, and the right educational resources, he strives to provide the same support and encouragement to his students. His goal is to help learners develop confidence, critical thinking skills, and the ability to tackle unfamiliar challenges long after they leave his classroom.
