As a veteran educator, with experience working in private, parochial, public, and charter schools, I am passionate about the future of education and engaging students and families with relevant, individualized, thought-provoking, experience-based learning opportunities. I believe that you learn by doing, by researching and discovering connections, by deeply thinking and debating, by writing and presenting your discoveries, and by reflecting and examining strengths and challenges, and by setting new goals. This process requires strong mentors, freedom to explore beyond the standards, honest feedback and guidance, and opportunities to travel and explore, to step out of comfort zones, to chart your course for life-long learning, joyful work, and inspired, healthy living. Aside from teaching English, History and Human Rights/Social Justice for the last three decades, I have created and led many field experiences, traveled with students to South Dakota, Guatemala, Panama, and Nepal, guided semester-long passion studies, designed curriculum for meditation/ mindfulness practices, economics, agriculture, communication & public speaking, journalism, outdoor education, and service learning, etc. Raised in the midwest, educated at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Southern California, I continue to grow as an educator by taking classes (online and in person) to stay current with technologies, different pedagogical philosophies, medical and scientific discoveries, and ways to organize, present, and assess student progress and accomplishments.
